Inaudible

A trumpet player becomes deaf and struggles to adapt to a new life. Inaudible is an animated short movie by Gints Zilbalodis

Note from the artist

Inaudible has a more adventurous color palette than my last few films which are dominated by blues and yellows. In Priorities it was important to me to convey the aspect of real time which is great for immersing the audience in the environment, but limits the diversity of colors. This story includes many montage sequences and the change of color is useful for showing the change of time. I chose not to rely on the movement of the camera to tell the story and the other tools like editing, sound design, music and color have to fill that void. Also the color red/pink is very important, which in this story reminds the main character the the love he has for music.

Two very pivotal scenes in the film are set in heavy rain storms. The great thing about rain is that it can be used in so many different ways. It can be soft and gentle or it can be exciting and loud. Rain can add movement to an otherwise still scene. It can add depth to a flat scene. It can be used like smoke to separate elements of the scene tonally and help focus the viewer’s eye on the most important part of the frame. By increasing the sound of rain you can build up tension.
