Visual effects supervisor Chris Townsend takes us through this summer blockbuster!

 

Turin, Italy:  Max Solomon and Chris Townsend join a growing list of speakers presenting the this year’s best visual effects in live action films during the 14th annual View Conference, October 14 to 18. Registration is now open for the classes. Here are the visual effects highlights.

John Knoll: Pacific Rim

John Knoll, the Chief Creative Officer at Industrial Light & Magic and overall visual effects supervisor for Warner Bros’ Pacific Rim, will give the opening keynote address. The five-time Oscar nominee and Oscar winner (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest) has supervised visual effects teams for more than 20 films including Star Wars Episodes I, II. His latest film, Pacific Rim, has earned $407 million at the world-wide box office.

Roger Guyett: Star Trek into Darkness

Roger Guyett was overall visual effects supervisor and second unit director for Star Trek Into Darkness, the 18th film for which he has led visual effects crews at  Industrial Light & Magic. Guyett has received a BAFTA award for Saving Private Ryan and a nomination for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Star Trek has now earned $466 million at the box office.

 

Christopher Townsend: Iron Man 3

To create the visual effects for Marvel Studios’ latest feature Christopher Townsend supervised the work of 17 visual effects studios. Townsend has been on the visual effects crew for 25 films including Star Wars: Episodes I, II, and III. He received a VES nomination for outstanding visual effects for Captain America: The First Avenger. Iron Man 3 is his sixth film as a visual effects supervisor. It earned $1.21 billion dollars at the box office.

Peter Muyzers: Elysium

Peter Muyzers received Oscar, BAFTA, and VES nominations for supervising the visual effects on District 9, which received an Oscar nomination for best picture, so it’s no wonder that innovative director Neill Blomkamp turned to Muyzers for Elysium. At Image Engine, Muyzers has been visual effects or digital production manager for eight films. All told, he has worked on 26 films. Produced by TriStar Pictures, Elysium has earned $218 million at the box office.

Max Solomon: Gravity

Gravity, Warner Bros.’ highly-praised, tense scifi thriller relies on visual effects and computer graphics to create the entire environment for this film. Max Solomon was animation director for Gravity at Framestore, and he supervised the previs, which played an especially critical role in filming the two astronauts in peril. Solomon was animation supervisor and animator on several Harry Potter films, and a digital artist on The Dark Knight. Gravity releases October 3 in Italy.

 

Marco Carboni: World War Z

The zombies in Paramount Pictures World War Z swarm with total disregard for themselves or any other in their hunger to attach humans. Marco Carboni, the crowd lead and technical director at the Moving Picture Company will share the techniques that helped make this film a huge success. Produced by Brad Pitt, who played the lead role, the film has grossed $539 million.

 

Troy Saliba: Oz the Great and Powerful
Directed by Sam Raimi, the film has Oz interacting with a tiny china doll and a talking, flying monkey throughout. Troy Saliba supervised the animation at Sony Pictures Imageworks for this film, which has grossed $492 at the box office. Previously, Saliba was animation supervisor for The Smurfs, G-Force, and Monster House, three of the 19 films on which he has worked as an animator.
